Hertford County's largest town, Ahoskie, is home to the Roanoke Chowan Community College. In addition to offering associate degrees in numerous programs, the college will custom design training classes for new and expanding businesses. Through the Customized Industry Training Program, customized training may be provided at little or no cost to meet special manpower needs when new industry is ready to go into production or an existing industry is seeking to expand its workforce. The college also has a Small Business Center which provides assistance to small business and entrepreneurs. Ahoskie is also home of Shaw University Cape Center. Shaw University Cape Center in Ahoskie offers Bachelor's Degrees in accounting, business management, criminal justice, sociology, psychology, public administration and liberal arts studies.
Chowan University is a four-year institution with programs in liberal arts and humanities, sciences and mathematics, fine arts, business, criminal justice, and computer programming. Chowan University's new School of Graduate Studies offers the only Christian University Master of Elementary Education Degree east of NC I-95. Chowan is also a member of the CIAA Conference Contender.
